Chikungunya is a viral borne disease spread by mosquito. It is spread in the similar manner as Dengue and causes Fever and severe Joint Pain. Other symptoms of Chikungunya include muscle pain, headache, lethargy, nausea, fatigue and rash. Chikungunya shares lots of symptoms with Dengue except arthralgia (Joint Pain) which is more severe in chikungunya.  This disease has very low mortality rate unlike Dengue fever. In year 2016, 560 cases of Chikungunya have been identified in Delhi but expected cases are much more as lots of cases have gone unreported.

While fever subsides within 1 week in Chikungunya but joint pain may persist for almost a year along with swelling in few cases. Chikungunya also has an impact on one’s immunity.

 

 

Symptoms of Chikungunya

  1. Fever –( 102-104 F)
  2. Severe Joint Pain with swelling (Sandhi Asthi Shoola): This is the most debilitating and long lasting impact of this disease. This may last for almost 6 months – 12 months in some cases. This is due to the response of one’s own immune system to parts of the virus that resemble the joint. This phenomenon is called as auto immune response. While the symptoms are less severe in younger patients, the older people and those with existing arthritic tendencies suffer badly.
  3. Body & Muscle Pain (Angamarda)
  4. Rash over body
  5. Nausea/vomiting
  6. Anorexia (Aruchi)
  7. Depletion in strength (Bala Hani)

 

Diagnosis

As the symptoms in Dengue and Chikungunya are almost similar, before treatment is commenced, it is important to reach final diagnosis. This could be done with Blood Test.

  1. Decrease Lymphocyte count
  2. RT –PCR
  3. ELISA for chikungunya specific IgM
  4. Other investigation to rule out Dengue and Malaria

Blood Test could conclusively establish if the patient is suffering from Chikungunya or not.

Treatment

As of date, no specific treatment is available for Chikungunya. Hence, only symptomatic line of treatment is followed that consists of:

  • Antipyretic/Analgesic drugs
  • NSAID’S
  • Plenty of fluids
  • Rest
  • Light Food

1. Neck

We have all suffered from a stiff neck, and know how much this can ruin your day. Most of the time our necks get into bad shape due a too motionless sleep. To combat this problem, try these two exercises after you wake up.

Stretch A: Sit up and straighten your back. Put your right hand on your right shoulder. Then put your left hand on the right hand side of your head, and use your body’s weight to tilt it towards your left hand side. Hold this position for 10 seconds, then switch sides.

Stretch B: Sit up straight and try to give yourself a double chin by dropping your chin into your chest. Hold for 3 seconds and repeat 10 times. To increase the pressure, press two fingers into your tucked chin.

2. Shoulders

Your shoulders could be in a poor position: turned forward and tilting downwards, giving you tightness and lack of full mobility. Instead of asking for low quality massages from your partner, be proactive and try these 2 workouts.image002

Stretch A: Stand erect, squeezing your shoulder blades together, as hard as you think you can, for 3 seconds before letting go. Repeat this exercise 12 times.
Stretch B: Stand in the middle of a doorway and bend your right elbow 90 degrees with your palm forward and your fingers pointing up, then put your forearm on the doorway. With your left foot lean forward until you feel tightness in your pectoral. Hold this position for 10 seconds then switch to the other side. 

3. Triceps 

Unlike their mighty neighbors, the biceps, your triceps are relatively under used throughout the day and need a bit of activity to keep from becoming tight and uncomfortable. Here are two super stretches to bring the triceps back into play.image003

Stretch A: Lift your right arm above your head, bending it with the elbow. Put your left hand onto the right elbow. Then slowly pull your right elbow downwards and backwards until there is tension. Hold position for 10 seconds. Repeat on the other side.
Stretch B: Stretch your right arm at shoulder height across your chest. Put your left wrist on your right elbow, pulling your right arm to your body slowly. When you experience a bit of tension in your right triceps stop and hold position for 10 seconds. Repeat on your other side.

4. Forearms

Your forearms are extremely busy parts of your body, being the strength behind many of your hands’ daily duties, so you need to make sure they are being used properly and efficiently. Give these top exercises a go.image004

Stretch A: Move your arms in front of your chest, bending at the elbows, and cross your right arm in front of your left. Move your right wrist behind the left with your palms (or backs of hands) touching. Hold position for 10 seconds. Switch to the other side.
Stretch B: Get yourself down on all fours like a dog, with your hands under your shoulders and your hips above your knees. Turn your hands at their wrists one after the other until your fingers are facing your knees. Hold position for 30 seconds.

5. Wrists

As anyone with arthritis knows, your wrists are at the same time very delicate and necessary. So learn how to build them up with these great stretches. image005

Stretch A: Take your right hand, with the palm facing out. Turn your wrist back with your fingers pointing up. Spread out your fingers and softly pull back at your thumb, using your other hand. Hold position for a few seconds, then do each successive finger. Repeat this exercise with your left hand.
Stretch B: In prayer position, with your hands clasped over your chest move your hands slowly down from your chin to your waist. When you feel some stretch in your forearms and wrists hold position between 15 to 30 seconds. Repeat this exercise a few times.

6. Back

Both men and women can either wake up with pain or suddenly damage their back muscles at any time in life. But unfortunately this gets likelier as we get older. To try and stay on top of any possible back nightmares, or even uncomfortable twinges, try these two exercises. image006

Stretch A: Stand up and place your feet a small stride apart. Put your hands on your hips and lean back gently until you experience stretching in your lower back. Hold this position for 3 seconds and repeat 12 times.
Stretch B: Lie down flat on your back with your knees bent upwards and somewhat apart. Then drop your knees to the right hand side and hold position for 10 seconds. Repeat on your left side.

Six Stretch Exercises for Sciatica Pain Relief!

I always thought there wasn’t much I could do when my sciatica pain flared up. But now that I’ve found the following routine, I know there’s an answer. These 6 simple exercises help relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve, and can be performed from the comfort of your own bed with excellent results for sciatica pain relief

Sciatica

Sciatica is an intense and searing pain, sometimes experienced as numbness or tingling, that can be felt around your lower back and shoots all the way down to your legs. This routine was developed at the University of Washington’s Physical Therapy Department, by Jennifer Howe. It’s especially designed to target herniated discs, bone degeneration and tight hip muscles, all of which cause sciatica. Even if you don’t know which of the three factors is causing your pain, try all the stretches and see which one helps.Tight hip muscles The following stretches will loosen the muscles in your hips. They might be pressing on your sciatic nerve, causing your pain.

Knee to opposite shoulder

Lie on your back with your legs extended and your feet flexed. Raise your right leg and hold your hands behind your knee. Pull your right knee gently across your body until it reaches your left shoulder. Hold this position for 30 seconds and repeat once more. Switch to raise your left leg to your right shoulder.

Hold this position twice.

Knee to opposite shoulder

 The Figure-4 Stretch

Lie on your back with your knees bent and place your feet flat on the bed. Cross your right ankle over your left knee forming a 4-shape, as seen in the photo below. Hold your hands behind your left knee and gently pull your legs towards your chest while pressing the right knee away from your chest. Hold this position for 30 seconds and repeat it another 3 times. Switch legs and repeat the exercise 4 times.

Stretches for bone degeneration 

Create spaces between your vertebrae with these moves. These will help prevent them from pinching your sciatic nerve.

Knees to chest

Lie on your back and hug your knees to your chest, while allowing your lower back to curve. Hug your knees in this position for 30 seconds. If this stretch eases the pain in your legs, repeat this position another 3 times

Knees to chest

 Posterior pelvic tilt 

Lie face up on your bed with your knees bent and your feet flat, and place your arms behind your head. Lower yourself until your entire lower back touches the bed, as you see in the photo. Hold this position for 5 seconds and then return to the start position.

Repeat this exercise 10 times.

 Herniated disc 

These two press-up stretches can help create distance between the bulging discs in your spine. This relieves the pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Press-up 

 Lie on your stomach and position your elbows directly under your shoulders, placing your forearms flat on the bed parallel to each other. Lift your chest and stretch your spine from the tailbone to the top of your neck, slightly arching your back. Hold this position for 30 seconds while breathing deeply. If the pain in your leg subsides, repeat this exercise two more times. If you don’t feel any relief, skip the press-up extension (the next and last exercise).

Once again, lie face down with your hands flat next to your shoulders. Press your palms into the bed while lifting your upper body, making sure to keep your hips and pelvis on the bed. Stretch your spine from your tailbone to your neck while slightly arching your back. If you feel pressure on your lower back, stop lifting your chest. Hold this position for 10 seconds and then slowly lower yourself back to the start position. Repeat this exercise 10 times, making a set. Do 3 sets of this exercise in total.
