Stressed is Desserts Spelled Backwards

Does stress send you into a spiral of eating anything and everything that’s loaded in sugar or fat like ice cream or chips?

If so, you’re not alone.

A recent Huffington Post survey of US adults found that almost everyone (91%) say they experience some level of stress in their life while 77% say that they’re regularly stressed out. Nearly half of these who said they’re stressed eat more as a response. .During times of stress, we often turn to traditional “comfort” foods such as macaroni and cheese, pizza, and ice cream. Ironically,

High-fat foods are usually the worst possible choices because they can make us feel lethargic and less able to deal with stress. Not only that, but stress can drive up our blood pressure and raise serum cholesterol levels, wreaking havoc on our arteries and increasing our risk of heart attack. If you don’t implement healthier ways to cope with your emotional needs, it will become increasingly harder to maintain a healthy weight.

So how can we prevent ourselves from going too far?

  • High-fiber, carbohydrate-rich foods: Low-fat, high-fiber, carbohydrate-rich meals with plenty of fruits and vegetables.Scientists believe carbohydrates cause the brain to produce more serotonin, a hormone that relaxes us. And lots of fiber is helpful in preventing late-night binging.
  • Fruits and vegetables:Chronic stress can weaken our ability to fight disease. By upping our intake of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, we can boost our immune system
  • Have a glass of water: Then decide if you still “need” to eat.
  • Just WAIT: When you’re reaching for ice cream, chips or a cookie, think WAIT, which stands for what am I thinking? In most cases, just thinking WAIT will help you realize that you aren’t physically hungry but you’re feeding your emotions.

Last but not the least; massage at your favourite spa can work as a perfect panacea for any stress. So next time you feel stressed, make it as hedonistic as a dessert!

Boost immunity with Spa Therapy..Really?

Getting a massage not only helps you relax, it might also benefit your immune system. Clinical studies have indicated that regular massage not only helps alleviate stress, but can naturally increase the immune system’s cytotoxic capacity (the activity level of the body’s natural “killer cells”) and decrease the number of T-cells, which improves the body’s immune functioning overall. Furthermore, massage therapy helps to improve your blood’s circulation and lymph drainage, two systems that help to flush out those nasty little invaders that can hamper your immunity.

immune defense

In one study by Gail Ironson, M.D., HIV positive men were given 45 minute massages five days a week, for a month. They showed an increase in serotonin and an increase in cells that are viewed as the first line of defence in the immune system.

Deep tissue massage

Most of the people are unaware that massage actually has a profound influence on your immune system. A warm muscle is a happy muscle. Studies show that a higher body temperature helps certain immune cells work better. Just like regular exercise can keep your muscles strong, regular massage can help keep your immune system performing at its peak.

If you work really hard you deserve to relax. Even better, taking the time to get regular massage therapy can help keep you from having to take sick days off and miss all that hard work you love to do! It’s hard to lead a stressful life when a weakened immune system gets in the way. So get proactive and get a massage today!

Benefits of Massage …. Again …. good to remember important things:)

The Benefits of Massage:

1. Alleviate low-back pain and improve range of motion.
2. Assist with shorter, easier labor for expectant mothers and shorten maternity hospital stays.
3. Ease medication dependence.
4. Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow—the body’s natural defense system.
5. Exercise and stretch weak, tight, or atrophied muscles.
6. Help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts.
7. Improve the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin.
8. Increase joint flexibility.
9. Lessen depression and anxiety.
10. Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks.
11. Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation.
12. Reduce postsurgery adhesions and swelling.
13. Reduce spasms and cramping.
14. Relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles.
15. Release endorphins—amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkiller.
16. Relieve migraine pain.
Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fast-paced world may be idealistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. This translates into:
17. Decreased anxiety.
18. Enhanced sleep quality.
19. Greater energy.
20. Improved concentration.
21. Increased circulation.
22. Reduced fatigue.
23. Furthermore, clients often report a sense of perspective and clarity after receiving a massage. The emotional balance bodywork provides can often be just as vital and valuable as the more tangible physical benefits.
Profound Effects
In response to massage, specific physiological and chemical changes cascade throughout the body, with profound effects. Research shows that with massage:
24. Arthritis sufferers note fewer aches and less stiffness and pain.
25. Asthmatic children show better pulmonary function and increased peak air flow.
26. Burn injury patients report reduced pain, itching, and anxiety.
27. High blood pressure patients demonstrate lower diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and stress hormones.
28. Premenstrual syndrome sufferers have decreased water retention and cramping.
29. Preterm infants have improved weight gain.

Ayurveda can cure Arithritis – AIIMS study

In a significant validation for traditional therapies, AIIMS has found certain Ayurvedic formulations effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis that causes irreversible joint damage.

The study conducted on 125 RA patients, found Ayurvedic medicines Ashwagandha powder and Sidh Makardhwaj helped in relieving pain in tender and swollen joints and increased mobility in a majority of subjects. The study was part of larger research at AIIMS on therapies offered under traditional medicine. The PMs endorsement of alternative medicine has given further push to the programme.

Apart from RA, AIIMS is studying alternative therapies for epilepsy, Alzheimers and chronic heart failure among others. Dr YK Gupta, head of pharmacology at AIIMS, said scientific validation of alternative medicines was one of the mandates of the institutes. “Interest in traditional medicine is renewed and growing due to the adverse drug reactions and economic burden associated with modern system of medicine. The central government is promoting them too,” he added.

8 Pressure Points that Reduce Stress

We all have our ways of dealing with stress. Some people escape to a sunny beach, some prefer a nice glass of wine, and some even do our best to ignore it. Each way has its advantages (and sometimes disadvantages), but we can’t always do what helps at the exact moment we need it.

This is where pressure points become a quick and effective long term solution. Pressure points are areas in the body that, when applied with some pressure, can trigger various effects in our minds and body.

The Scalp

The Scalp is full of pressure points, many of which can effectively and discretely reduce stress levels. You can sit at your office desk, lean back and use two fingers to massage the point where the neck meets the skull for about 20 seconds. Much of the stress we accumulate during the day collects in the shoulders and neck muscles, and applying pressure to this point can relieve much of it.

The Ear

This pressure point is known as Shen Men (The Spirit Gate), and some experts claim it’s the best stress-relieving point in the body. In reflexology, it’s also used to reduce inflammation and pain throughout the body. It’s recommended that you massage this spot with an earbud or even a pen, and to take deep, slow breaths during the massage.

The Chest

Stress can make us forget to breath, or take shallow breaths. This point helps reduce the stress that accumulates in the chest, while reminding you to breathe normally again. Use three fingers to massage this point, or one finger to tap rhythmically on the area while taking deep breaths. If you experience chronic stress, combine massaging this point with the point between your eyebrows. The connection between these two points helps in calming the nerve system.

The Stomach

Many reflexologists prefer to use this point because it helps create movement that frees the chest and diaphragm, which improves the breathing process. Patients who go through this treatment instinctively take deeper breaths and almost always report a sensation or relief.

The Forearm

A classic spot for reflexology and acupuncture. Stress and anxiety create a reverse energy flow in the body, which this spot is supposed to repair. It helps your energy move in the right direction while aiding in your mental focus and stress reduction.

The Palm

The moment you press on this spot, you’ll feel your stress evaporating. It is located on one of the most important meridians (an energy channel), which affects the heart, liver, and pancreas. It is believed that much of the stress we experienced is stored in the liver, so applying pressure at this point is highly effective. It is also a great spot for treating headaches, stomachaches, indigestion, and insomnia – all of which could be symptoms of stress.

The Calves

If you feel stress in the upper part of your body, massaging this spot is perfect. The area could be quite tender in people who deal with a lot of stress, and in women in particular.

The Foot

Pressure at this point can help ease a stressed mind that keeps rethinking whatever it is that causes your stress. Some reflexologists believe that this is the best meridian for treating the pancreas and that its location – at the center of the foot, helps patients reduce their stress and provide better attention to their bodies.
